People rarely name a star on a whim. There's usually a reason — sometimes a happy one, sometimes not. Over time, a few of those reasons have stuck with us. Here are some, lightly edited for privacy.
"For the dad who always pointed at the sky"
"On every camping trip he'd point up and start naming constellations — half of them made up, we found out later. After he passed, I named one after him. Now I do the same thing with my own kids. I make up names, and I tell them he's up there somewhere, probably laughing about it."

"We didn't know how to mark what happened in a way that felt right. A star felt quieter than most things — not a monument, just somewhere to look. We go outside some nights and just look up. That's the whole ritual. It's enough."
"For twenty years of putting up with each other"
"We'd genuinely run out of things to give each other. I named a star after the date we met and he actually cried, which after two decades takes some doing. It's the thing he brings up first when people ask how we've lasted this long."
"Just because she'd spent her whole life giving things away"
"My mum has never once kept anything for herself. I wanted to give her something nobody could borrow, lose, or eventually take back. A star with her name on it felt like the only thing that fit."
None of these stories are really about the gift. They're about what it allowed someone to say, when nothing else quite fit.
